Martin has played bass guitar in English country dance bands all his adult life. He formed Stömp with Sheena Masson in 1994 to push country-dance in new directions, taking on Scandinavian and jazz and rock influences, as well as developing traditional English folk forms. Since that time Stömp have performed at numerous festivals and dance events, including The Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals, and the Leipzig Tanzhausfest.
Over the last decade, as a sound engineer for BBC Radio 3, Martin has collected folk and dance music from all over the world, recent highlights including Brazil, Appalachia, and Galicia. Since 2000 Martin has balanced live music for the BBC coverage of the Womad Festival, and world music performances from the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Recent professional accolades as a sound engineer have included the Sony Awards, the Campaign for Racial Equality Awards, and a Prix Italia for innovative sound design.
World music inevitably informs his approach to his the bass, and his love of traditional music continues to sustain his career as both engineer and musician.
Martin continues to divide his time between live music performance and BBC Radio 3, and will do so until the money runs out.
